The First International Conference on Film Histories of Taiwan and Asia was held on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 in the Arts and Activities Complex Building at Taipei National University of the Arts. Four keynote speeches were given in the two-day conference respectively by Prof. Michael Baskett of University of Kansas, Prof. Iwamoto Kenji of Nihon University, Prof. Yomota Goki of Kyoto University of Art and Design, and Prof. Darrell Davis of Lingnan University in Hong Kong. Seven papers dealing with issues related to the focus of the conference, namely "cinema war of the 1930s and 1940s" were also presented in four sessions, entitled respectively "Colonial Cinema and the War", "Colonial Film Propaganda during the Sino-Japanese War", "Chinese Cinema during the Sino-Japanese War", and "Film Actors in the Sino-Japanese War".The conference concluded with a round table discussion on "Film Wars: How Chinese and Japanese Governments used films for propaganda purpose in the Sino-Japanese War" by honorable guests from abroad. More than 50 scholars and students attended the conference, during which heated discussions on various issues errupted constantly. All guests expressed satisfactory remarks after the conclusion of the event.
